Question For You!

I have a question for all of you before I proceed to my next write-up.

According to all of you, what kind of people normally would go to see a psychologist?

In other words, what are the problems that usually make people go see a shrink?

Awaiting your responses in my comments section and will respond to your comments with a new post!

Thanks!

I think that people who have any emotional problems that are affecting their day to day lives, and cannot solve those problems themselves, should (or would) go see a shrink.

I would see you if I know there is something bothering me, and I don't know a way out of, even after I have consulted my friends, my parents, anyone who I know that cares for me. I would go see you if I would think of ending my life (because NO life is meaningless!), if I cry myself to sleep everyday, and don't see a light at the end of the tunnel. I would see you if I know I am miserable and do not know of a way out by myself.

i can't think of anything really specific either...but on a general note i think when someone needs answers from themselves and talkin to oneself ain't helping then talking to someone else who's qualified enough to make sense of ur questions should help.
could be coz of emotional/mental stress due to various reasons...
off the top of my head... bad boss at work and u have to put up with crap and are helpless
...a broken home and how that affects ur perception
...an abusive relationship
...things which make u feel insignificant , worthless
and more that i can't point out

i guess those people, who have such kind of problems that they don';t know of. or may be they know somehing is going wrong somewhere in their life but cannot comprehend that it could be because of them, or their behavior.
they are not those people whom we can declare mad/crazy in real sense because they are not. they do no live in virtual world. they just cannot control their feelings which are actually harming their well being..
and it;s not necessary that they don;t have anybody to talk to.. coz one can talk to somebody when he know;s what the problem is. and hence could need a psychiatrist.

well i would say broken relationships, family problems like misunderstandings in marital life and between kids-parents, could also say a depression but it might be influenced by the above problems.
Though not everyone having these probs would go and see a psychologist. Somehow we all believe we can deal with probs on our own.

IMO, it would be someone who does understand that they need to talk to someone who can understand their though process better than them... stuff which a friend/confidante cannot do!!

:)Frankly speaking...as per my definition psychologist isn't a doc who can treat us but a person who can UNDERSTAND me...

as per ur ques...anyone, everyone and noone, we all have one or the other prob...but then most of us sort them out with the help of our folks....some o us just dnt have them with us....

i'm not sure. but i wud recco ppl with the follg symptoms to go see a shrink:
a. u're emotionally unstable. and it's not bcoz of ur hormones.
b. u're feeling depressed but can't put a finger on what the reason is.
c. u're not sure of ur sexuality & it's causing you to feel weird.
d. u lack confidence to face the world. or urself.
but mostly, i'd say anyone who is having trouble getting to know their own worth/potential.

wow! now, u've made me think if i need one...

I would assume its hard for a person who needs help to realize he needs help from a psychologist. It's usually people close to them for example family and friends who would convince them to go see a shrink.

As for the problems or symptoms that makes you go see a shrink, they would be:'
a) acute depression
b) suicidal thoughts
c) hypertension

I wonder they are called 'shrinks'. Is it because they shrink your problems?

And yes, people who want someone to listen to do them, people facing problems, feeling indecisive, etc. They might just have a 'mental block' and they can be 'counseled' out of it by psychologists... The psychologist only helps him/her to realize his problem, overcome it and take on the world. :)

Hmmm.. interesting Q an have been pondering over it all morning, since i read the post.Think i mite have some answers now.

Some of the kind of people who should see a shrink are
- people who are losing faith in themselves
-feeling sad and unhappy even when there are good things happening around them
- Those who cant seem to get IT(read the problem) out of their head over long periods of time
- Those who are ANGRY all the time or have extreme feelings of HATRED
- Those who get very creative & imaginative about problems that they may have to face
- Those who are not able to sleep tight for long periods of time.

to list a few..

psychologist or psychiatrist are just not there to JUST TO help mentally unstable. Its a misconception that only crazy people need help!

The thing is the world is a crazy place, and its crazyness affects us all differently,

-A dyslexic person struggling to cope up and understand simple things ..here his/her frustration needs to be addressed. Someone to assure him that its okay. Giving logical, evidential facts that it happens... and there is a way out ..towards betterment

-A soldier back from war- here his/her lost in faith in humanity ...needs to be addressed. the Post-trauma needs to be taken seriously...before any suicidal thoughts kicks in. Someone needs to assure him/her the safety and show him that there is some 'Good' left in the world.

-A bipolar person.. who has already been accused of being unpredictable ..needs to be treated sensitively... to help him/her to lead a normal life... the person needs to be told and assured that there is medicine and counseling help to overcome her fear.

-An ADHD person... who is condemned by being hyper, perky, and jack/Jane of all trades and master of none...needs to be helped to let him/her know that there are ways to deal with it.

These are sensitive issues... which medicine cannot address with a pill... or only with pills.

These are real issues which needs to be addressed sentively with a professional help.

WHY? Because these are real lives with real problems!

It's an interesting questions and one that has a lot of relevance to society at large. Haven't given it enough thought though so will only reply later.

i really dont know - after reading your response I need to see if i really need help...

People with emotional problems who think that talking to someone about their problems may help.

very interesting qn Solitaire.

Alot of ppl think it's mentally ill (MAD as the common man puts it)ppl who need the help of a shrink. I say alot of 'normal' ppl need to see shrinks...cos it's the common man who goes on w.o. realising what they r doing to themselves, most of the time..such as driven by greed, power, money, selfishness and heartlessness.

People who have problems and are unable to solve them by themselves? The ones who are disturbed. The ones who have crossed the lines. Too happy, too sad, too active, too thoughtful.
who just want to get rid of the too part and become like everyone else. generic.

Mansi Trivedi said...

In your poll, i am slightly uncomfortable with the word "crazy". everyone who visits a psychologist is not crazy. there are degrees of unbalance but definitely no black or white. so we shud not call them crazy. :(
i have someone really close who was disturbed after her divorce and the society labelled as crazy. everything went downhill after. it was a tragic end.

I believe that people who experience problems related to their mental health (especially those which they cannot explain themselves) seek a psychologist.

People suffering from depression, panic attacks, schizophrenia, personality disorders, are, in my opinion the ones who frequent the psychologist the most.

basically people who want to talk, and believe that they wont be judged and rather heard.

I don't know seriously!

I may want to say.. when you are drowning under a pressure, you have no idea from where it is building up.. and yu have no one you trust.. so that yu can giv your hand to them and they pull yu to safety..

may be those people.

Maybe when you need a solution..to the mundane problems..which have some logical explanations, which you don't want to accept!

maybe! I am not sure!

For me.. a friend is enough... may be I don't have such big problems.. or maybe I have and I know how to deal with them.
