Poll Results & More Questions

I was very sad (but not surprised) to see the results of the poll I had put up on "Short and Sweet" a few weeks ago.

The question was:

If you were suffering from some emotional difficulties, would you go see a counselor?

Yes most definitely! I would like to talk to an expert about it: 6 responses

No, I do not like to talk about my problems with anyone: 1 response

Yes, but only if I know the person: 2 responses

No! I am not crazy!!!: 7 responses

I don't know. I never thought about it: 1 response

As I followed the poll for several days, the trend was for the maximum responses to be "No I am not crazy" while the first option was chosen only in the last few days.

I would like to know from you, the readers of this blog....

1) Do you still feel like only crazy people go to counselors?
2) Has your perspective changed even a bit after reading some of the posts here?
3) Would you go see someone if you experience rocky paths in your life and feel like you cannot handle it on your own?
4) Would you be ashamed about it and keep it a hidden fact from your family and friends?
5) Would you recommend someone to go see a professional if you feel they need the help?

Your honesty is appreciated!

for the qs-

1)Nope, not at all.
2)Yes, it has.. a lot! I have my brains working over-time because of your blogs ;)
3)Yes! If I can't handle it.. I will get to my friends.. which if they can't I would cme to an expert like yu.
4)Not from my friends, but may be from my family. I know my friends would understand but I don't think my family would. But well maybe I will give them a chance to understand. But thats still a "maybe"
5)If they are close to me, then. Because everyone doesn't take this in the right sense.. The first thing they will say is -"do u think I am crazy?". Which thy are not, they just have problems that they and me can't solve thats all.

my response to your poll was -"es most definitely! I would like to talk to an expert about it"

I guess, I understand. And well better than before. And all thanks to you.

Solitaire there r alot of ignorant ppl out there. We cant help that.

But I sure know that 'crazy' is a very wrong term to use on ppl who need Counseling. U know some ppl r even ashamed of the word Counseling. I once suggested it to a friend who was finding it hard to deal with a breakup...she accused me of calling her 'mad'. I didnt even use that word..but she assumed that thats what I meant by the word Counseling. So u see. ***roling eyes***

Anyways..

**1) Do you still feel like only crazy people go to counselors?

NO.

**2) Has your perspective changed even a bit after reading some of the posts here?

ALOT. But I always knew that Counseling is for anyone who's finding it hard to deal with something in their life...not just cos ur mentally ill etc.

**3) Would you go see someone if you experience rocky paths in your life and feel like you cannot handle it on your own?

I mite try.

**4) Would you be ashamed about it and keep it a hidden fact from your family and friends?

nope...Im never afraid to tell my loved-ones how I feel. I'll first talk to my family and close friends, and if they cant help me, I'll get professional help.

**5) Would you recommend someone to go see a professional if you feel they need the help?

I already have...many times. 2 of my friends received Counseling cos I asked em to. And it wasnt cos they were 'crazy' or something...they both were dealing with a domestic violence issue. And they r doing fine now.

tnxx for educating alot of ppl thru ur superb post Solitaire! we need more ppl like u.

Keshi.

@ Abhishek, people have not grown up and yet you think women suck at driving?

@ Veens, thank you for answering all those question. Sorry about the overtime. I am sure you will be paid in some way..not by me though! If your friends say "do you think I am crazy", make them read my blog!

@ Keshi, thank you so much! I hope to spread a lot of awareness through my blogs.

I would certainly take up #3 & #5 if needed.... these are sensitive issues... so not many people want to acknowledge or even resort to it...

but then by educating them... you can make a bit of difference :)

Good luck with this task :)

1. no.
2. yes, surely. my perspective has widened... which is why i keep coming back to read more.
3. maybe. i'm not sure, though. it depends on the situation. but if i reach a point, where i absolutely can't handle it myself, i would.
4. i usually don't discuss my issues with family. i would discuss it with a couple of really close friends, tho
5. sure! also, i would explain to the person why getting help is not equal to being crazy/mad or anything of the sort.

Here's my answers...
1) Nope
2) Nope, not changed, coz I never thought only crazy people went to counselors.
3) Yep
4) I wouldn't be ashamed about it, but just like I won't go tell everyone about the band-aid I put on my bruise, I wouldn't go around publicizing it either. And family, definitely not, because of many reasons...a) they would feel they failed somewhere, and thats why I am in a mess b) they will simply not understand, they will probably say get over yourself and forget this nonsense (basically asking me to deny) c) they will get worried and decide to camp in my house!!! :) Now THAT will definitely drive me crazy.
5) Yep.

1. N/A. I never felt that way.
2. N/A again. I already believed in the issues you write about but definitely getting more food for thought here.
3. Definitely.
4. No, I won't be ashamed. Inner circle of family and friends will know before I go to the counselor. I won't care about telling or hiding from others just like I don't care about sharing other information of my life with them.
5. Definitely. I have already done that in past.

I guess you can tell that I voted for the first option :)

@ Neeku, thanks!

@ Rayshma, thanks! keep coming back!

@ Aneri, how about having your family read this blog to widen their perspective. also, when we go to physiotherapy or to get our teeth cleaned or something, we do not mind telling anyone about it. That way, would you mind telling ppl about being in therapy?

@ P, good job!

well, it's sad to see a psychologist sad just b'coz of some poll. anyways, my answers to your questions are:

1)no, i never felt so till date.
2)yes, my perspective about psychological cases has changed a lot after i started reading ur blogs.
3)definitely, but to my frnds first.
4)mayb i'll keep frm my family. but i know that a secret(abt any grievances) is just like a rotten tomato. the more u hide it, the more it stinks.
5)i don't want to give unwanted advices but still, if the other's a dear one, i'll definitely advice him/her to go to a psychologist.

**1) Do you still feel like only crazy people go to counselors?

Nope.

**2) Has your perspective changed even a bit after reading some of the posts here?

Its widening my horizons.

**3) Would you go see someone if you experience rocky paths in your life and feel like you cannot handle it on your own?

Yes i would when it comes to friends, family or anyone i am comfortable with and closer. but if you talk about professional help. Honestly that would be my last resort if everything seems to fall over.

****4) Would you be ashamed about it and keep it a hidden fact from your family and friends?

I don't think i will be ashame. I would probably tell a few close ones about my little engagement with the counsellor. Until the whole process end and i see a improvement. I might think abt telling the world.

*****5) Would you recommend someone to go see a professional if you feel they need the help?

Yes i would if i can't help any longer. But often it takes a while for people to register. Even myself honestly.

Cheers!

Thanks Solitaire.

1) Do you still feel like only crazy people go to counselors?

absolutely not - it is more a playing field for the well to do and the elite. i think there is more of a stigma about it in lesser educated areas.

2) Has your perspective changed even a bit after reading some of the posts here?

not one bit.

3) Would you go see someone if you experience rocky paths in your life and feel like you cannot handle it on your own?

i have been in analysis at least five times, with varying degrees of success. in my life, analysis only became effective when I realized that the shrinks were just human too. when i saw analysis as more of an informed, human source for sorting out my issues. it became more effective and viable. shrinks are just humans, not shamans.

4) Would you be ashamed about it and keep it a hidden fact from your family and friends?

amongst my family & friends it is as common as ordering soup, so no.

5) Would you recommend someone to go see a professional if you feel they need the help?

depends on the person and where he/she is at in life, and if i knew a professional that i felt would be able to connect with this person.

that being the case, i would most likely arm them with some of my provisos, in the hope that my layman's perspective and own experiences could facilitate some beneficial result.

Some of you were a bit off track while some of you were right on target!!

the above presumes some right or wrong answer.

It doesn't matter to me if I am off track or on target to you or not.

doesn't seem relevant.

to me, there are no right or wrong answers here, just opinions which may or may not be what you are expecting.

i love your stories!

1) No
2)Yes
3)Yes..am actually contemplating the idea right now. Anyone you can recommend in my area?
4)No
5)Absolutely!

ummm...no, not going spend any time and energy into convincing my folks about anything :)

Regarding the other question...would I tell someone, yeah, sure, as part of causal conversation. I mean if someone asked me so what did you do today, and if I had been to a counselor that day, i would mention it.

@ Satish Bolla, thank you!

@ Sweetstickychewy, thank you for the honest answers.

@ Willheim, It is nice for someone who has been in psychoanalysis so many times to be here commenting. It makes people believe that any one of us can be in your position.

@ Carolinagal, actually I know no one in that area. Sorry! :(

@ Aneri, that is what I was looking for. Thank you!

In India at least people still think you need to be 'crazy' (I hate the term when it is used that way) to go to a counselor...

IncorrigibleV said...

1) nope i never thought so
2) yeah i cud never point out reasons, honestly nor did i ever give it so much thought, now i think i know a tad bit better
3) yup, but i wud try talkin to ppl i know first lest they can tell me abt any kinda similar experiences and that helps...
4) i dont see any reason to hide it.
5) why not...though i wud be careful wording it, afterall i wudn't want to hear "don't interfere in my life, i know better!"
PS: all honest answers!

Solitaire...

let me try to draw an analogy..

# What does Solitaire do when the bulb fuses the first time : she changes the bulb

#What does one Solitaire when the bulb fuses the second time the second day: she changes the bulb..probably gets a replacement bulb from the vendor

#What does Solitaire do when the bulb fuses the third time the third day: she diagonizes the problem in the circuitry ...since she knows she cant do it she calls an electrician ..the problem of bulb getting fused is taken care off..

The bulb getting fused : A emotional problem

Bulb vendor: temporary easy solution, self help...

Electrician :Psychologist

we all do want to solve our emotional problems ourselves...we fail...but we try...only when we have exhausted all the trials do we wish to give our controls to a third person..the specialist..the shrink..:)
