U, me, aur nonsense!!

No offense to those who liked the mush of the much raved You, Me Aur Hum. But in my opinion, it is a very BAD movie, portraying all sorts of wrong information, and misguiding laypersons. UGGH!!

So what is this movie about? Alzheimer's disease? GREAT!
Wonderful concept. Novel. Educational. Informative. Different. Blah Blah.

Did you know that the average life span of someone diagnosed with Alzheimer's is 8-10 years after diagnosis? Going by the average, Kajol should have been dead at 38 considering she was diagnosed at 28.Yeah yeah, FEW people do survive for another 20 years. Do you know what state they are in by that time? A mere VEGETABLE, unable to function on their own, let alone wear pearls on a cruise and blush to the memories of their young adulthood.

Alzheimer's is a progressive disease. What does that mean? It means it gets WORSE as time passes by. That means that Kajol should technically be wearing diapers, be fed with a spoon, and be carried around on the cruise!!!

There is no cure for Alzheimer's. So I wonder what the doctor at the nursing home wanted to do with her? Medication only slows the process down, does not get rid of it!

Alzheimer's has several stages. What you see in the movie is Stage One. Apparently, she remains in stage one for 25 years!! AMAZING! Miracle, blessings, hallucinations, or true love? Only Bollywood can answer that question.

Oh and did I mention that most people get diagnosed with Alzheimer's in their 50s and 60s? Yeah yeah. The doctor mentioned that Kajol is a RARE case. Did you know that the youngest person to be ever diagnosed with Alzheimer's was in their 30's and had Down's Syndrome (a form of mental retardation). All early diagnoses of Alzheimer's are due to this particular syndrome. Did Kajol look retarded to you in any way, shape or form?

So now my dear friends, please do rave about the movie's songs, acting, costumes, dialogues, dances, scripts..whatever! But please do NOT RAVE about its wonderful story and please do not definitely BELIEVE any of it!!

For more information on Alzheimer's disease, please look here.

FYI, research studies have shown that turmeric can prevent Alzheimer's disease and that's why a very low percentage of Indians suffer from it compared to the rest of the world.

Wooo Hooo!!

That is the first review I have read in my life that is written by a medical professional...guess you should forward this to all major newspapers...

in the name of movie masala we are sold all kinds of crap and the innocent and illeterate beleive it as TRUTH...

but bollywood has its own world I guess....know of the physics defying stunts of mithun and rajnekant...

I laughed hard in the movie too... like what do the director assume the audience to be...

Bunch of Idiots I guess!? ! ...

Very informative and nicely written... Ceedy is right... u should forward it too movie critics.

well its hindi cinema...and not a educational one......

my grandfather suffered from this disease when he was in 80s...first my relatives thought y he is acting weird ..later on he was diagnisd with this one....now he is no more...everything happend in a span of 2-3 yrs....

****saw a mithun movie few years back.....he gets a shot of bullet in his head......he killed that villian after that...and after his head operation doctor cums out and says.." bullet nikal diya aur uske saat unke sir mein se tumour bhi".....and then he showed the tumour....and it was like samosa covered ketchup....lol....

now if u start putting logic in these cinemas...then whom shud i blame...lol

I liked the concept of the story that how he had to try hard to woo her and then how he had to put in a different kind of effort to stay with her.
Hindi movies usually rarely have their facts right. So I don't really take them seriously. But thanks for the post. Very informative.
And yes, the turmeric part is very correct. One of my colleagues is working on the medicinal value of turmeric. I feel happy to see an American scientist working on an Indian herb :)

even considering the fact that observed medical cases show this behaviour, is it absolutely impossible for something like that to happen? slowly progressing alzheimer's i mean. just like ppl thought passive smoking couldn't cause cancer, once upon a time. my great grandfather died of alzheimer's, and he lived until the age of 93. he couldn't recognise anyone ever since he turned 85 or something, and he had to be helped with everything

good to see a review which pointed out the crap that was sold in well-concealed packs by our renowned film-makers. nice narration. ignited a spark of interest in me to watch the movie ASAP. got the dvd with a frnd of mine.

but i feel that the time has come for you to watch the rambo-killer, arnie-ball-buster, jackiechan-beater, our-own rajnikanth. wht do ya say?

anyways, i was on a picnic to some island. returned late in the night yesterday. was away from the bloggerville for a couple of days because of this picnic

@ Ceedy,

Not a professional yet...but almost there. :)

I so agree with you. Ajay Devgan has sold a lot of crap to the Indian audience and they all have unknowingly lapped it all up. But when I am here, there is nothing to fear! Main uska parda farsh kar doongi!

@ Neeku,

You laughed hard?! Good for you! I almost banged my head on the wall and yelled out my usual expletives every 10 minutes!

i havn watched the movie but i was shocked to hear the story was abt Alzheimer's!
I mean its a new thing and all but lies cant make new stuff eh??

Well the film was medically incorrect and emotionally taxing as i hav heard a friend say!
as in it was an emotional pain to see such senselessness!

OK GET READY FOR A SUPER DUPER LONG EXPLANATION ;)
HERER I GO:
/////No offense to those who liked the mush of the much raved You, Me Aur Hum. But in my opinion, it is a very BAD movie, portraying all sorts of wrong information, and misguiding laypersons. UGGH!!///

IT IS SUPPOSED TO BE AN ENTERTAINER WHOSE SOLE AIM IS TO MAKE MONEY.IF THE AUDIENCE WANTS AUTHENTIC INFORMATION THEN HE/SHE SHOULD SEE A DOCUMENTARY. BTW IF YOU ARE INTERESTED CHECK OUT THE MOVIE ‘IRIS’. IT IS BASED ON THE TRUE STORY OF IRIS MURDOCH AN IRISH NOVELIST WHO DEVELOPED ALZHEIMER’S.

///Did you know that the average life span of someone diagnosed with Alzheimer's is 8-10 years after diagnosis? Going by the average, Kajol should have been dead at 38 considering she was diagnosed at 28.Yeah yeah, FEW people do survive for another 20 years. Do you know what state they are in by that time? A mere VEGETABLE, unable to function on their own, let alone wear pearls on a cruise and blush to the memories of their young adulthood.///

ALTHOUGH 8-10 IS THE AVERAGE LIFE SPAN AFTER DIAGNOSIS IT IS JUST THAT,A-V-E-R-A-G-E. IN SOME CASES THERE IS SLOWING OF PROGRESSION AND PLATEAU IN OVERALL FUNCTIONAL IMPAIRMENT BEFORE DETERIORATION RESUMES. BESIDES, OTHER FACTORS LIKE PRE DIAGNOSIS LEVEL OF FUNCTIONING AND LEVEL OF EDUCATION DO PLAY A PROTECTIVE ROLE IN COGNITIVE DECLINE.SO,LIKE EVERYTHING ELSE IN MEDICINE THERE IS NO HARD AND FAST ROLE THAT CAN BE APPLIED TO ANY DISORDER.

///Alzheimer's is a progressive disease. What does that mean? It means it gets WORSE as time passes by. That means that Kajol should technically be wearing diapers, be fed with a spoon, and be carried around on the cruise!!

There is no cure for Alzheimer's. So I wonder what the doctor at the nursing home wanted to do with her? Medication only slows the process down, does not get rid of it!///

THIS IS ABSOLUTELY TRUE

///Alzheimer's has several stages. What you see in the movie is Stage One. Apparently, she remains in stage one for 25 years!! AMAZING! Miracle, blessings, hallucinations, or true love? Only Bollywood can answer that question.///

AGAIN,NO HARD AND FAST RULE

///Oh and did I mention that most people get diagnosed with Alzheimer's in their 50s and 60s? Did Kajol look retarded to you in any way, shape or form?///

DOWN’S SYNDROME DOES PUT PEOPLE AT RISK OF ALZHEIMER’S. HOWEVER IF ONE GOES PURELY BY DSM OR ICD THERE IS EARLY ONSET DEMENTIA WHICH IS ANYONE WITH ALZHEIMER’S WHICH STARTS BEFORE 65. SO ABOVE ARGUMENT DOES NOT HOLD.

///FYI, research studies have shown that turmeric can prevent Alzheimer's disease and that's why a very low percentage of Indians suffer from it compared to the rest of the world.///

I AM NOT AWARE OF ANY SUCH STUDIES. IN ANY CASE I DO NOT BELIEVE THAT PREVALENCE RATES OF ALZHEIMER’S DEMENTIA ARE LESS IN INDIA.SOME OF THE REASONS FOR LOW RATES COULD BE
1-CLINICIANS ARE NOT DETECTING IT
2-RELATIVES DO NOT BRING PTS WITH DEMENTIA TO THE APPROPRIATE CLINICS
3-IN THE WEST AS LIFE EXPECTANCY INCREASES AND PEOPLE LIVE LONGER, ALZHEIMER’S IS MORE LIKELY TO MANIFEST.AS LIFE EXPECTANCY INCREASES IN INDIA,WE ARE GOING TO SEE MORE OF ALZHEIMER’S

FINALLY, MOST OF THE ARGUMENTS PUT FORWARD BY YOU ARE VALID ON A SUPERFICIAL LEVEL WHICH SHOULD BE GOOD ENOUGH FOR LAY READERS. BUT IF ONE WERE TO CRITICALLY EVALUATE IT AS A MENTAL HEALTH PROFESSIONAL THEN ONE COULD FIND MANY FAULTS AS I HAVE DONE.HOWEVER THAT WOULD BE MERE NIT PICKING.

AS FAR AS TREATMENT IS CONCERNED THERE ARE A FEW CHOLINESTERASE INHIBITORS IN THE MARKET WHICH SLOW DOWN THE PROGRESS OF ALZHEIMER'S-DONEPEZIL,RIVASTAGMINE,GALLANTAMINE.
CEREBRAL VASODILATORS ARE NOT EXACTLY TREATMENT OF CHOICE.

HOPE THAT HELPS

IF YOU ARE REALLY INTERESTED IN DEMENTIA READ THE CHAPTER IN TXT BK OF NEUROPSYCHIATRY BY LISHMAN MY FAVOURITE TOME

@ Pri,

Here are some of my comments to your insightful comment.

*I AM NOT AWARE OF ANY SUCH STUDIES. IN ANY CASE I DO NOT BELIEVE THAT PREVALENCE RATES OF ALZHEIMER’S DEMENTIA ARE LESS IN INDIA*

Trust me there is a lot of research going on to find out how diet can affect Alzheimer's. The textbook that we had for Alzheimer's also talked about turmeric. Moreover, one of the comments also talk about the same.Yes, the reasons that you have listed very well may be confounding the statistics, as has always been the case for any emotional disorder in India too.

*IF THE AUDIENCE WANTS AUTHENTIC INFORMATION THEN HE/SHE SHOULD SEE A DOCUMENTARY*

I do not necessarily think that an audience should have to see a documentary to get accurate information. There are English movies out there such as the one you mentioned (Iris, which I have seen), the notebook, and our very own hindi movie Black which gives accurate information. Very recently, TZP also threw light on dyslexia, a very new concept for Indian audiences, without boring the crap out of them. So why not this one?

*DOWN’S SYNDROME DOES PUT PEOPLE AT RISK OF ALZHEIMER’S. HOWEVER IF ONE GOES PURELY BY DSM OR ICD THERE IS EARLY ONSET DEMENTIA WHICH IS ANYONE WITH ALZHEIMER’S WHICH STARTS BEFORE 65*

I am very much aware of early-onset Alzheimer's but something as early as 28 is not possible if the adult does not have Down's syndrome. Again, this is going by my textbook and not any website.

*IN SOME CASES THERE IS SLOWING OF PROGRESSION AND PLATEAU IN OVERALL FUNCTIONAL IMPAIRMENT BEFORE DETERIORATION RESUMES*

Do you truly believe that the plateau can be for 25 years?

Dr. Pri, how much exactly did Ajay Devgan pay you for this? I think he has paid you a lot! Thank you for your valuable comment. It helps to get a doctor's perspective. Are you planning on going into psychiatry?

@ G-man,

It is not impossible. Some people can live for another 20 years, as I said in the post. But as you recall, your great grandfather had to be helped with everything, right? How come Kajol is whiling her time on the cruise and romancing to glory?

Occasional Brilliance said...

i personally thought that the movie was rubbish, though a lot of my friends thought it was romantic. and why i thought it was rubbish, has been very nicely listed in your post... what shocked me was that a lot of the reviews that did come out for this movie, totally neglected the medical angle...

well logically thinking and based on current evidence, the plateau phase would not last for 25 years.however medicine is replete with cases which populate the tails of bell shaped curve.so in short, anything is possible...
