Personality Disorders-I

Since most of you voted to know more about personality disorders that are in the "DRAMATIC" cluster, I am going to start off with one of those.

Let's see if you can think of anyone in your life as I rattle of what a HISTRIONIC PERSONALITY DISORDERED person is like. Since most people diagnosed with this disorder are female, I will use the pronoun "her" in this post

Ready?

Do you know of anyone who is preoccupied with her looks?

Yes, I know that most of us are concerned. But she will be PREOCCUPIED. Not only that, she will dress provocatively, expose herself, give you seductive looks, and be flirtatious. Yes, sex will often be on her mind.

Do you know of anyone who is uncomfortable unless she is in the center of attention?

Yes, she will act very dramatically as though performing before an audience with exaggerated emotions and expressions, yet appears to lack sincerity. In parties, she will tend to be loud and excited, and will love having her own pictures taken.

Do you know of someone who does not have many friends? Or is constantly getting into fights with the ones she has?

Yes, since she is very needy, and not everyone can constantly give her that assurance, she may skip from one friend to another. She may not be able to form deep relationships and people may gradually notice that she is shallow and immature. She may appear to be self-centered. They often times believe that others have bad intentions towards them.

Do you know of someone who is easily frustrated and impulsive?

She may be easily bored with the same routine, constantly seek excitement, and may begin projects but not be able to finish them. She may make rash decisions and speak or act without thinking.

Do you know of someone who is extremely moody? And needy?

Yes, she will shift emotions rapidly. She may be happy and cheerful one moment, and the moment she is criticized or disapproved of, she will become extremely agitated. She may be very sensitive to everyone's approval and will need constant reassurance that she is liked!! Worst of all, if she does not get the desired attention, she may threaten suicide!

If you know of someone like this, you may also realize that she (or he) may be highly successful socially as well as professionally. They do not lack social skills and tend to glorify their disappointments and failures to seek attention. However, this disorder does interfere with their happiness, often leading to depression. They also have difficulty with successful romantic relationships and friendships, and blame others for their failures!!

Personality disorders begin in early adulthood and gradually become worse with age. It is hard to treat these individuals but not impossible!! If you know of anyone with the above symptoms and feel like you can influence them to go seek help, please do so!!

Feel free to ask me more questions if you want to.

Remember: This was HISTRIONIC PERSONALITY DISORDER!

as i finish this post I thinking of a dear friend... however, i am afraid i would never gather courage to ask her seek help. :(

But thanks alot for sharing this with us.... you are doing a wonderful work but educating ignorant people like me... about such issues...

I knew something had been wrong with her... but never knew that it could be such a disorder and also it could be treated.

Thanks again!

@ Ghost,

STOP it!! You can tell me this when we discuss schizophrenia or something. Right now, concentrate on learning about Histrionic Personalities!

@ Neeku,

Hey thanks, I got the access. You have quite a few interesting reads here.

Useful for writing... Histrionic personality disorder - that has a certain ring to it.

Macabreday said...

i think such people also become highly possessive about people they think they r close to, and easily exhibit jealousy, when the other person spends more time and attention with others. just my observations.

Needless to mention… that was very useful info Sneha… Thanks.

I’m thinking the challenge is in identifying that a person actually does suffer from this disorder. ‘coz some of the behaviors u’ve listed (eg: in need of attn, get bored with routine, look for exciting things to do etc) may actually be exhibited by any1 one of us at one time or the other. The point is…it won’t be consistent behavior or for that matter as extreme as it would be in a person who has the Histrionic disorder. Extremity and Frequency is subjective….n that’s the challenging bit. (Hope I’m making sense and not confusing u)

Also…is there a reason why this type of disorder is called Histrionic disorder??? When I saw it listed as a choice of disorders about which we wanted to learn…I thot this had sumthing to do with ppl obsessing over their past (history) or sumthing of that sorts! It would be easier to remember it if we knew why it was named this.

Good one Dr. Psychobabble I can relate most of these symptoms with someone whom I have known in the past [BA]; now after reading this post it makes me think if that person has this disorder?

Nice post Sol! Very informative.
I have a few questions. For a person to have HPD, do they have to display ALL of the symptoms you mentioned? Are some of the behaviors sufficient to diagnose HPD?

I know you can't cure it but how do you treat such a disorder?

Neetal said...

I kinda sort of agree with what pavi said...like getting bored with the routine and looking for new things... well that could be anyone.... so does that mean... the person who has this disorder has to have all the symtoms...

Anu said...

Thanks for sharing these details. I have a good friend, from college and she seems to have every one of these traits. Its hard to handle her, because her moods fluctuate so much! But I found out that patience and a smile always seem to help

Solitaire said...

@ Keshi,

Thanks for that comment that was not to be published.

Without the correct diagnosis, treatment may be not be the accurate one. We all may have some traits or the other but to be diagnosed with a certain disorder, there are various scales that are used which I do not want to get into on a BLOG.

Moreover, self-diagnosis without the correct information is wrong. Its better that people go to PROFESSIONALS for diagnosis.

Solitaire said...

@ Neeku,

Thanks for the appreciation (which is far few and rare since people think that WE are constantly judging them).

Solitaire said...

@ SS,

Thank you!! Keep visiting!

Solitaire said...

@ Barbaras,

Know anyone?

Solitaire said...

@ Macabreday,

Could be. But that happens in other disorders too which I will be talking about in the coming weeks. Thanks!!

Solitaire said...

@ Broca,

Don't be! What makes you say that?

Solitaire said...

@ Pavi,

You are welcome!

Its not confusing at all! We tend to use INTENSITY, FREQUENCY, and DURATION to find out if the extent of these behaviors and how much of DISTRESS its causing to people. I may be bored of painting and may decide to switch to sewing. That's normal. If its causing distress and inconvenience to self/others then its a problem. Anyway, that symptom is not the striking characteristic of this disorder. Consider it a supplement.

Also about the word histrionic, what can I say? English is funny! If you look into the dictionary, it will say histrionic pertains to drama.

Solitaire said...

@ Shiva,

Maybe!! I would need to TALK to that person to know for sure! And I don't wanna do that! ;)

Solitaire said...

@ Neeku,

The most prominent characteristic of this disorder is DRAMA. Consider a person with histrionic personality disorder to be a DRAMA QUEEN/KING.

Also look at my response to Pavi.

Solitaire said...

@ Anu,

Fluctuation of mood could also be BIPOLAR disorder. The main thing to think about here is is she akin to a DRAMA QUEEN?

Pavi!!!! said...

OMG!!!!! did u say Drama-Queen! thats wat V calls me at times!!!!!!

Also thanks for ur xplanation.

Keshi said...

ty Sol!

And nah I wasnt talking abt self-diagnosis, was I Sol? :)

I hv to agree with Pavi's comment 100%.

As long as it's not consistent and extreme, we all do hv bits of these symptoms. Just that some of us dun SEE it that way.

Very informattive post.

And yes, this comment is for publishing :)

ty!

Keshi.

Solitaire said...

@ CG,

Thanks! No a person does not have to have all the symptoms but 5 out of 8 based on the DSM-IV to be diagnosed with a full-fledged histrionic personality disorder.

There are many treatments such a cognitive-behavior therapy, family therapy and things like that. Although, in most instances, people with HPD are in DENIAL and resistant to it.

Solitaire said...

@ Keshi,

Do read my response to Pavi. It may also answer your original question.

Thanks!!

Solitaire said...

@ Pavi,

Haha! Let's make him live with someone with HPD. Then he will know its true meaning!

Very interesting post and looking forward to reading the entire series.

The discussion here is also very informative.

Cant think of anyone who has all these symptoms.

Just by observation a question (not generalizing - asking) Dont many Americans fall into this category?

And Ghost can you share some of those talking beans with me?

Shruti said...

..this.. looks like I know someone with this disorder :(

Monika said...

wow.......this is so informative & while reading i was getting scared coz i felt that i cud relate to some of the things u mentioned coz there are times when we all want attention in a party & times when we do get bored with routine.

Glad that I read the comments thereafter. :)

I'll be looking forward to reading more posts from u

I think I know just the one who has this - was kinda outta words explainin to ppl what the problem might be. Gladly found the term now !!

Solitaire said...

@ cinderella,

Well now you know! Hopefully it won't be so hard anymore.

Solitaire said...

@ Rehaan,

That's sad. Maybe I should improve on this. Cos this is written for laymen who know nothing about psychology.

Solitaire said...

@ Broca,

Oh tell me about it! If they don't get attention through their words and actions, then they begin stripping!

Solitaire said...

@ Hiren,

I hope you can!

Thank you!

Solitaire said...

@ Monika,

Oh I am glad you did too. Do not self-diagnose based on these posts ok?

Solitaire said...

@ Shruti,

That makes it two of us.

Solitaire said...

@ Ceedy,

First of all, trust me. You do NOT want those talking beans from Ghost. They can be fatal.

Secondly, no not most or all Americans fall in this category. They just appear much friendlier than the Indian population but that does not make it a clinical disorder.

Thirdly, one does not have to have all these symptoms to have a disorder. It has be 5 out of 8 in the DSM-IV.

Solitaire said...

@ Tuhin,

I think she does have a bit of that. Great! I had not even thought about it.

Did you read my recent post on Psychobabble? It talks about men and SATC!

Solitaire said...

@ Ghost,

GAWD!

Solitaire said...

@ Tys and Keshi,

Great! Now you both have therapy buddies just like people have gym buddies!

Solitaire said...

@ Karthik,

Its great if you don't.

Thanks!

rayshma said...

i do know someone who clearly exhibits all of these... in quite drastic measures at that too...
not sure if i can influence her to seek help.. coz she insists she's very happy with the way her life is. also, we're not that close.
i used to think she only needs attention... hence the histrionics all the time... but maybe there is a deeper cause behind her behavior.
i think i may ask her to read ur blog. maybe she'll get the hint?

ceedy said...

1) Ok - dont want more lethal stuff than that being served in food s&s

2) Yes agree that americans are more friendly - but I was talking about "over dramatization" of many small issues...dont want to call it a disorder or else it will be stereotyping

3) thanks for that info - so one has to be only 62.5% cookie to get therapy :)

Ankur said...

ya i think i know one such person!! :(

god!!
but i dont think she has this personality disorder, but all ur questions actually fit to her!! :(

but temme, if someone is badly hurt, she has a lot of pain, then cant this be for time being?

Is there any remedy to this?
i think there has to be more before i can say that she is ill!!
and i hope she isnt!! :)

IncorrigibleV said...

nah i don't know anyone like that as of now... but i guess i'll know if i meet one

Ankur said...

do u reply by choice?? :O
