Does the child in TZP need the help of a psychologist?

YES!! and YES!!

Psychologists deal with emotional problems-TRUE!!

But how do you think that a child will be diagnosed with a learning disability such as dyslexia, disorder of written expression, math disorder, (yes all these do exist!), mental retardation, or ADHD?Not everyone has an Aamir Khan working in their school to recognize that a child is any of the above. Morever, even if they did, that is no way of labeling a child with certainty!

The truth is that there are several (thousands and thousands) of tests that will aid in the process and help a clinician come to that conclusion. Yes! It is ONLY a clinician or a psychologist that is allowed to administer these tests, not a teacher, not a parent, not a neighbor or a layman, NOT the internet, either.

Some of these tests including the Wechsler Intelligence Scale for Children and the Woodcock Johnson Test of Achievement. It takes hours to administer the test, there are set protocols for doing so, the tests are normed for certain population through standardized procedures, and only people with certain credentials (read psychologists) are allowed to administer, score, and write up reports on the results.

Moreover, the psychologist will work with the parents on extending their support and giving them pointers on how to help their child and accelerate his/her progress. Apart from that, the psychologist will also work with the school and teachers on recommending some special services and accommodations for the child so that he/she can perform to the best of their ability despite their weakness. And last of all, the psychologist may choose to work with the child on their self esteem!!

Cutting a long story short...the child in TZP needs the help of a psychologist. I would not have minded helping him as long as Aamir Khan had continued to be his teacher!

Some people without realizing this they keep on stressing there children to read and write well. Just simple they showing others children, and why can’t u? I agree that these children whom lack for strength needs psychological treatment.

I think people confuse need for psychological help is only for serious nervous disorders. Nice piece of info :)

That was informative…stuff regarding the different tests n who can administer them. I didn’t know about them and I feel this is useful info .

Now coming back to kids like the TZP kid…A few thoughts:
1.Recognition of the existence of the problem is just the beginning. I feel even if the parents of such a kid has recognized that their child is not normal and has him enrolled in a special school n all of that…even then a psychologist will be required for the child, at least in the initial years. It would be hard for a child to accept that he is “different” and “its okay to be different”.
2.Also it is not essentially a “psychologist” that is required. Such a child needs someone who knows how to work with such children, induce confidence in them, make them accept themselves and like themselves for what they are and guide them on how to lead their day to day lives. These skills could be in any layman who is not necessarily educated in that field, though of course the education is a plus point.

Do you agree?

I have not watched TZP. So was AK the teacher in the movie? And was he diagnosing and helping the child recover from a mental disorder?

Good one Solitaire! I do think that the child needs a psychologist's help especially to deal with the low-self esteem.
As far as diagnosis is concerned, of course there is no one better than a psychologist/psychiatrist. However, I do believe that there are many special-ed teachers with enough experience to diagnose such learning disabilities as well..in the US anyways. What do you think?.

Haven't read the entire post yet...but a few initial thoughts, on the diagnosis...

A friend's wife is a teacher here in San Jose. They do regular tests for ADD in their school in the beginning of the year, and tell parents the required action. Also, this is a private school. And has only until 6th grade, I think.

My friend's wife teaches the 6th grade. One kid..although not diagnosed with ADD, lacked focus a bit, as is probably normal with kids. She would tell the parents to just put in a lil more effort in the kids' studies than they usually do. Mom never paid attention. Near the end of the school year, the mom went to the principal claiming that the teacher said my kid has ADD. My kid has been suffering in this school for the last 6 yrs, and you guys did not tell us about it, you guys ought to return the fees for the last 6 yrs!!!! My friend was called in. Smart woman that she is, she keeps a journal of each meeting with the parents, gets them to read and sign it. She took the journal to the principal, and proved that no such thing happened.

Seems like in this case, knowledge of ADD was being abused!

First of all parents are the perfect psycologists for a child. But another person like in TZP is needed when they cant really understand/neglect child's real problem.

Keshi said...

yes its in the hands of parents to be alert and also not to expect impossible standards from a kid. Every kid is different when it comes to capabilities.

** I would not have minded helping him as long as Aamir Khan had continued to be his teacher!

LOL Solitaire!

rock on!!

it still does take someone to realise that the child needs a psychologist!!

rayshma said...

that's a neat piece of info. i mean, tho i did think that d child needed professional help, i wasn't aware that u can't gauge that it IS dyslexia or ADHD from the internet. geek, that i am!
i just hope parents open up to the notion of letting their kids see a psychologist, if reqd... it's still a taboo in india, as far as i know...

You do a tough job sneha di !!

i somehow thought the kid dint need any psychiatrist..but you know better!!

i think there are a lot of misconceptions about what u ppl do and can do and what all only u can do...thanks for clearing the air a bit :)

@ Jeevan, its hard for people to digest that they need to take their own child for psychological treatment.

@ Deepti, yes very true! "I am not mad" is the usual response.

@ Pavi, :)

@ Sam, thanks!

Solitaire said...

@ Ravi, thanks! Will Aamir Khan like me? ;)

@ Brocasarea, oh ya! I have done at least 300 evaluations if not more.

@ Pavi, your first point is very valid. This will happen a lot in India. Here, people are more accepting and do not really view a learning disability as "abnormal". With respect to your second point, an empathic layman may be able to do that but I really think that special education teachers are there for a reason. They do have more expertise than a layman.

Solitaire said...

@ Cosmic, OMG!!!!!!!! You have to watch TZP! It was the best movie of 2007. AK is a teacher in it and recognizes that the child has a learning disability.

@ Carolinagal, a special ed may be able to recognize that a child has an LD but they cannot diagnose a child with that. That is against the law.

Solitaire said...

@ Aneri, oh ya!! ADD has been abused a lot. Has been misdiagnosed too. And people sometimes want that label for medication.

@ Keshi, only if people had the awareness....sigh!

@ Pri, thanks!! I knew you would understand..:)

@ Sam, that someone can be a parent or a teacher..but people love to live in denial.

Solitaire said...

@ Rayshma..who knows..with TZP, people might become more aware. In fact, my friend and I were discussing that dyslexia might become a vogue in India now!!

@ Divya, haha!

@ Ghost particle, you are toooo funny!

@ Vandita, Just a bit? :(

Oh! I never thought it like this.. and I was blinded by Aamir Khan to see anything other than him and his personal attention :)

well really thanks for the info dear. I never knew.

If you are going to be the pshycologist, then can I be your assistant at least when you would around the teacher Aamir.
?
please consider me only. NO ONE ELSE!

Now what has poor Ishaan done - why bribe for Aamir to be around when you treat him....

denial is the worst disease that one suffers from!!

broca's area said...

hey wanted ur opinion !..how to motivate a person who has decreased self esteem!!!..[one of my friends]???

Solitaire said...

@ Veens, ok..but I will not be able to pay you. Is that alright?

@ Ceedy, Teachers can give me the exact feedback of the child's behavior at school. Therefore, Aamir is required!

@ Sam, count ignorance in too!!

@ Brocasarea, that is such a broad question!!!

ceedy said...

I knew that was coming.
Just leaving Aamir aside - a question for you - do you meet the client first or get feedback from people around - if latter does it make you biased?

Anonymous said...

TOTALLY ALRIGHT...IF U DNT PAY ME!

thanks DEAR!
